Instagram Reels are built to be shared inside the app, not necessarily saved as files. That is why the Save option is missing on some Reels, why an in-app save never appears in your camera roll, and why a screen recording still carries the Instagram logo moving across the frame. There are two legitimate routes: the official save, which keeps the Reel inside Instagram, and downloading the public media stream, which gives you the source video without the platform watermark. This guide walks through both, on iPhone, Android and desktop, and explains what to do when a link refuses to parse.
Only public Reels can be saved by either route. A private account, a deleted post or a login-gated story has no public media stream, and no third-party tool can create one.
Quick answer
Tap the share icon on a Reel and choose Save to keep it inside Instagram under Settings and activity > Saved. If you need an actual video file, tap the three-dot menu, choose Copy link, paste that link into PureSnap and download the quality tier you need from the result page. The downloaded file comes from the public media stream, so it does not contain the moving Instagram watermark.
Method 1: save a Reel inside Instagram
This is the official route. It works on public and private Reels alike, because you are saving a bookmark, not a file.
- Open the Reel in the Instagram app.
- Tap the share icon at the bottom right of the screen.
- Choose Save.
You will not find the Reel in Photos or in your camera roll afterwards — Instagram stores saves inside the app. To see them, open your profile, tap the menu, and go to Settings and activity > Saved. On Android the path is the same; on the web, saved posts appear in your profile menu.
The catch is that a saved Reel is only watchable while you are signed in to Instagram. If you delete the app, lose the account or go offline, the bookmark is useless. It is also not a file you can hand to a client, drop into an editor or archive.
Method 2: download the Reel without the watermark
When you need the video itself, copy the link rather than the video.
- Open the Reel and tap the three-dot menu in the corner of the player.
- Tap Copy link. On desktop, copy the URL from the address bar instead.
- Open PureSnap in any browser and paste the link into the parse box.
- Wait for the result page, choose the quality tier you want and save the file.
The parser reads the media stream that Instagram serves publicly, so the result is the source video without the floating Instagram wordmark. If the Reel is part of a carousel, the result is a gallery instead of a single file, with one image per slide in the original order.
You do not need an Instagram login on the parsing side, and you do not need to install an app. The browser you already have is enough.
Method 3: send Reels straight to Photos with the iOS Shortcut
If you save Reels often, copying and pasting every link gets old. The PureSnap iOS Shortcut reads the link from your clipboard, sends it to the parser and writes the finished video directly into the Photos app. Install it once from the Shortcut page, then run it from the share sheet on any Reel.
The Shortcut still obeys the same rule as the website: it can only resolve public media. It is a convenience layer, not a permission bypass.
What you actually get
- The original stream, not a re-encode. The parser points at the file Instagram already serves, so you get the source resolution and bitrate rather than a re-compressed copy.
- No moving platform watermark. The Instagram wordmark is composited by the player, not burned into the source stream.
- Multiple quality tiers where available. The result page lists what the source exposes; it does not upscale a single file to fake a higher tier.
- Carousels as galleries. Photo and mixed carousels come back as a set of images you can save one by one.
- No server-side copy. The result page links to the media; the download happens in your browser.
Troubleshooting
- The link opens the Instagram app instead of the browser. Long-press the link and choose Copy link rather than tapping it, then paste that text into the parse box.
- The parse fails on a Reel that plays fine. Remove tracking parameters and keep only the
instagram.com/reel/...part of the URL. Share links with extra query strings are the usual culprit. - The download has no sound. The audio track is part of the same file. If it is missing, the source stream itself was published without audio in your region.
- The result is an image, not a video. That post is a photo carousel, not a Reel. Save each slide from the gallery.
- The Save button is missing. The creator has disabled saving, or Instagram has removed the option for that content type or region. This is a creator permission, and no tool should claim to override it.
- A private account link fails. Private posts are not publicly served, so there is no stream to read.
A short note on legality
Downloading is not automatically legal or illegal; it depends on the content, your jurisdiction and what you do with the file. Saving your own Reels, or content you have explicit permission to use, is the safe case. Re-uploading someone else's Reel without credit, or using it commercially without a licence, is not made acceptable by the absence of a watermark. Check the platform terms and the creator's wishes before you republish anything.
Frequently asked questions
Can I download a Reel from a private Instagram account?
No. Private accounts are not served publicly, so the parser has no media stream to read. The task fails and credits are refunded automatically.
Does PureSnap keep a copy of the video?
No. The result page points at the media stream; your browser fetches the file directly. Nothing is stored on our servers.
Why is the downloaded video missing the Instagram watermark?
Because the watermark is an overlay added during playback. The underlying stream that the parser reads never contained it.
Do photo carousels work?
Yes. Public image carousels are returned as a gallery, and each image can be saved at the resolution Instagram serves.
Can I use this on a computer?
Yes. Copy the Reel URL from the address bar, paste it into the site in any browser, and download. Nothing needs to be installed.
Is the download the same quality as the app?
It is the quality the public stream exposes, which is often the same as playback but can differ. The result page lists exactly what is available rather than guessing.
Everything above applies to public content only. Private Reels, login-gated posts and live broadcasts have no public stream, so no downloader can honestly promise them.
